Fierce competition for top AI talent

Google, DeepMind and Anthropic are all pursuing aggressive tactics to keep their talent pool of top AI researchers. These include strict non-compete agreements, which hinder the researchers from jumping ship. According to new reports, salaries for AI researches can exceed $1 million a year, with bonuses and stocks options increasing dramatically in value.

This new type of noncompete-agreement that Google uses includes a Garden leave where employees still get paid for 1 year's leave.

While Google argues that these measures are in line with industry standards and necessary to protect intellectual property, critics claim they limit career mobility and innovation. Some researchers who have left DeepMind have reportedly faced legal barriers when attempting to work for rival AI labs, slowing the flow of talent between key players in the field.

Reuters broke news that Chinese AI companies have collectively spent $16 billion on NVIDIA AI chips. These companies include leading Chinese firms such as Tencent, Alibaba, and Baidu, which have been stockpiling AI chips.

Out of the $16 billion, some include the highest sought-after H100 chips. U.S. sanctions limit China’s ability to get the most advanced chips in bulk, and

Chinese companies are bulking up on the next best alternative in fear of even stronger sanctions in the future.

China is also looking for domestic alternatives to fill the gap, with companies such as Huawei and Biren Technology looking to invent their alternatives.
