OpenAI launches o3 and new o4-mini
Better than Gemini?
OpenAI has released two new models as competition with Google’s Gemini intensifies. The models — o3 and o4-mini — are designed to improve performance in math, logic, coding, and visual understanding. O3 is positioned as OpenAI’s most advanced reasoning model yet, while o4-mini is optimized for faster, cheaper inference, targeting lighter workloads and competing directly with Gemini 1.5. Can OpenAI reassert itself as the clear frontrunner?

Reasoning Capability: Advanced chain-of-thought processing with step-by-step logic
Visual Understanding: Handles low-quality, zoomed, and rotated images
Code Execution: Runs Python directly in-browser via ChatGPT’s Canvas
Performance (SWE-bench Verified):
o3: 69.1%
o4-mini: 68.1%
o3-mini: 49.3%
Claude 3.7 Sonnet: 62.3%
Token Pricing (Developer API):
o3: $10/M input, $40/M output
o4-mini: $1.10/M input, $4.40/M output

OpenAI could acquire Codeium for $3 billion

Codeium
OpenAI is acquiring Codeium, now rebranded as Windsurf, in a deal valued at approximately $3 billion. Windsurf is an AI-powered coding assistant that offers real-time code suggestions and supports a wide range of programming languages, with a focus on Git integration. The tool is designed to improve code writing and debugging efficiency.
Following the acquisition, OpenAI is expected to incorporate Windsurf's technology into its existing suite of developer tools. This will likely enhance products such as the ChatGPT code interpreter and further develop OpenAI's competitive offerings in the AI-assisted coding space, including potential improvements to tools like GitHub Copilot.
