xAI launches API access for Grok 3

Elon Musk’s xAI has released an awaited feature, the API. This came as no surprise considering it’s the standard for AI companies of similar magnitude. Right now, every AI company positions itself in a way to make its API seem favorable over the competitors. The pricing (seen below) puts Grok in the same price range as Anthropic’s Claude, which is pricier than Google’s Gemini 2.5, deemed by many as the best API.

The API gives developers access to two versions:

  • Grok 3: Priced at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.

  • Grok 3 Mini: A scaled-down version for lighter tasks, costing $0.30 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens.

Fast tiers:

  • Grok 3 (Fast Tier): $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens

  • Grok 3 Mini (Fast Tier): $0.60 per million input tokens and $4 per million output tokens

OpenAI sues Musk

Sam Altman

OpenAI has filed a countersuit against Elon Musk, following his February 2024 lawsuit that alleged the company had strayed from its founding mission by prioritizing profit and aligning too closely with Microsoft.

In its response, OpenAI claims that Musk previously supported the idea of transitioning to a for-profit model and left the company in 2018 after the team declined to give him control. The countersuit also alleges that Musk attempted a $97 billion acquisition of OpenAI in 2023 and proposed a merger with his own AI company, xAI.

OpenAI describes Musk’s actions as an attempt to regain influence over the company and accuses him of making misleading public statements. The legal proceedings are ongoing, with a jury trial scheduled for 2026.

Best model by the end of the month?

Best model by the end of April? Here is the current moneyline: Google is the strong favorite, followed by OpenAI and xAI in third. Claude and Meta are not in the graph, with the Llama 4 release failing to meet expectations, also being accused of engineering benchmarks.
